About
Welcome to the Troop 1970 website. Troop 1970 meets every Monday night from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the United Christian Parish of Reston (address below). If you would like to learn more about the troop, you may contact, Troop 1970 Scoutmaster Russ Housley or Troop Committee Chair Vic Moravitz.
Since 1965, Troop 1970 has been “Keeping the Tradition”. The troop takes pride in offering a “traditional” scouting program. The key features of such a program are adherence to the patrol method by the scouts, participation in a minimum of one outing per month, participation in an extended period of camping each year (summer camp), and service to the community.
These are the primary focus items by which the scouts of Troop 1970 learn and advance. None of these activities can occur without active participation by the scouts and their family.
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
We attempt to keep our troop dues to a minimum by funding most of the troop’s expenses through fundraising efforts. The troop sponsors one fundraising event each year. Our annual “Mulch” sale in March is a big undertaking that requires the effort of all the scouts and their parents. The mulch sale is structured so that over 50% of the troop’s net proceeds are reallocated to the scouts and their family in the form of “Scout Bucks”. The Scout Bucks can be used in lieu of payment for all scout outings and can be redeemed for purchases of scouting related equipment.
We earnestly invite all adults to actively participate in the operation of the troop. The troop is what you make it. Please come to troop meetings and participate in the outings. You are also encouraged to register as Adult Leaders and contribute your ideas and provide oversight at the monthly Troop Committee Meetings (see our Calendar for specific dates and times).
Finally, we look forward to seeing both you and your scout on a regular basis. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the Scoutmaster, Troop Committee Chair or any member of the Troop Committee.
Summer 2008 Updates
During the past six months our troop has revamped our Policies & Procedures Manual. In addition, we have created three positions (Programs, Administration, and Finance). If you click on the image on the left you can view the Committee Organization Chart.
