November Bike Outing

This outing consists of bike rides of various lengths (see permission schedule) on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Park (C&O) towpath, overnight camping at the canal or battlefield campsites at Antietam, Maryland, and Scout Activities. Some Scouts may choose activities (camping only) which do not include biking. The troop will operate two trailers to transport bikes to the departure points.
Uniform: Scouts wear Class A uniforms while traveling to and from events.
Fee: $10.00 to pay for campsites and trailers. (Scout Bucks Payment/Transfer Form)
Bring the following:
- Bag lunch for Saturday Lunch.
- Some cash for lunch on Sunday or bag lunch for Sunday.
- If you are biking: Bring your bike helmets. NO Scouts may ride without helmets. Ian and Alex: You can’t ride if you forget your helmets! Bring an extra helmet, if you have one!.
- Bicycle; check for tires and brakes (especially brakes) in good condition. Check the general condition of the bike. C&O towpath surface is mostly hardpack gravel; there can be mud, depending on weather. Your bike should be equipped with a bell.
- Water: Bring water bottles. There is water at campsites along the towpath. There are also several places to buy food and refreshments, time permitting.
- Appropriate clothing including light, windproof jacket and gloves: layered clothing.
Be Prepared:
- Bikes should be equipped with working headlights and tail lights. Sunset on November 15 is 4:54 PM.
- Tire patch kit or spare tube to fit your bike’s tires, tire wrenches and bike tools, if needed, to remove a wheel. Bring a tire pump, if you have one. We have experienced flat tires on the last two rides.
- Bring your cell phone, if you have one. Remember to charge it!
