It’s time again for the Powhatan District Fall Camporee!
If you missed previous announcements, the Fall Camporee is October 3 -5, 2008 at Claude Moore Farm in Ashburn, Virginia and the theme is Scoutish Highland Games.
The camporee is fashioned after the Scottish Highland Games with patrol competition in many of the same events as the burly Scotsmen. There are “toss” events that go for distance, “throw” events that go for heights and timed events. Also, there will be two classes of competitors. The “Heavy Weight” class, the experienced patrols, and the “Light Weight” class are the new patrols.
For the camporee to be a success, we need your Troop’s help. After reviewing the list below, let me know which competition your Troop will sponsor. First come, first choice!
Caber Toss…….a caber is a long pole that is tossed end-over-end. The object is to balance the Caber vertically over your head, run forward and toss it so that it flips end over end and lands
Sheaf Toss….a bag of hay, you hurl straight up over an adjustable crossbar (think pole vault). Could use water balloons or pitch the burlap bag of hay (sheaf) with a pitchfork.
Weight Throw…..pick up the weight in one hand, sling it from side to side to gain momentum and throw it as far as possible.
Weight Toss….holds the weight with both hands, swing it back and forth between the legs before releasing it. In Highland games, the weight is brought up in an arc and tossed over a crossbar.
Clachneart…..a rounded stone that is thrown, similar to a shot put. Shot put or round stone could be used.
Braemar Stone…….Like the Clachneart, but a larger stone, something to roll or toss. Measured from start line, to mark of last toss by Patrol member.
Farmer’s Walk…..The competitor picks up two weights, one in each hand, and walks around a series of pylons (figure eight). Could be timed event for all patrol members or done with entire patrol. The entire patrol line up in single file, the first member carries the weights until they are tired, sets them down, moves to the end of the line, and the second picks up the weights and starts to move again.
Golf…..Scouts/patrols make clubs from twine, long stick (shaft) and short fat stick (club head) and hits plastic golf balls towards compass heading.
Clan War….Scouts stand on balance beam and try to knock each other off using water noodles.
Obstacle Course….Scouts run an obstacle course based on compass headings.
Highland Stilt Walk…..Scouts stilt walk over a pre-arranged course.
Storming the Castle…..Scouts makes ladder (lashings and knots) out of spares to go over fence, obstacle, climbing wall, etc.
Line heaving…..on signal, patrols tie sections of rope together using sheep bend and then take turns throwing rope between stakes located distance from starting line.
Tug-o War…..Team event just for fun and bragging rights. Competition between different clans (patrols), Scouts vs. Scouters, etc. OA to run event.
Toss the wellie…..How far can a Scout toss an old boot? Troop 1983
Fly Fishing …..Troop 1313
