A message from Scoutmaster Bob Leseman

Posted by admin on Aug 30 2015 - 11:58pm

This is the text of an email that was sent out to all members of Troop 1970 on August 30, 2015, from our Scoutmaster, Bob Leseman:

Scouts, good evening!

A little over three years ago, I was humbly honored and eventually accepted the call to serve as T1970's Scoutmaster.   It has been my great pleasure and honor to serve T1970's youth leaders as they mature as men.   It is with this in mind that I impart a Scoutmaster Minute.   I challenge every Scout in T1970 to answer the call to lead within the Troop.   Serving as a leader is hard work!   It will require sacrifices that you may not be prepared to make, but take the opportunity to become a humble leader who puts others ahead of their own needs.

As many of you may or may not know, I am in the process of answering my next call to service.   Apart from my full-time job and role as a Scoutmaster, I use my free-time to "moonlight" as a Major in the Virginia Army National Guard.   Our unit was told on short notice in June, that we would be deploying.   It is with a heavy heart I've had to tell my family, my employer, and now you, that I will be leaving on Sept. 11th for 9 months.   As a leader in the Army, I consider serving our nation the most noble of causes.   Our departure ceremony is on Sept-9 at Fort AP Hill, VA and if you are looking for a reason to skip school or work, you can RSVP here.   Anyone attending from the Troop will get the VIP treatment, :).   While I would love to see you at the event, your Mom probably isn't going to let you skip the first day of school, so alternatively you can follow our unit on Facebook here.

Last but not least, I am pleased to announce that the Committee has selected Mr. Juris Kelley as the next Scoutmaster.   Juris is an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster.   Juris has led every Whitewater and Wilderness Survival campout since I've been affiliated with the Troop.   Juris has also led a High Adventure Trip to "Sea Base" and recently Japan for the International Jamboree.   Among many other laudatory accomplishments, he also taught me how to start a fire with a 9V battery and make a sandwich while kayaking.    He also says that he can magically start a fire with a rocket motor, just ask him at the 1st Scout meeting of the year.   I always learn something new in the presence of Juris Kelley,   Juris, Juris, Juris!!!!   Please welcome Juris and help him accomplish our goal of making every Scout a Leader!

Ever Forward!  (<do you really know your Virginia History?).
vr, RWL
